A 48-year-old man was found hanged in his rented accommodation after being harassed by a lender from whom he had taken out a loan of Rs 50,000, local police said on Friday.
Dashrath Singh, from Chitrakoot district, lived in a rented house in Pasian, within the boundaries of Gopiganj police station, with his wife Durga Devi and their 12-year-old son. He used to run a street food kiosk in the area, said Inspector Gaya Prasad Shukla from Gopiganj police station.
Durga Devi said Singh took 50,000 rupees from a moneylender in Mirzapur and was regularly paying interest. Recently, after he missed a few payments for unspecified reasons, the lender allegedly started threatening him, Shukla said.
She added that the lender gave an ultimatum to make the payment on Thursday. Following this, Durga Devi went to the bank but found it was closed. She and her son then went to a neighbor to arrange the money. When they returned, they found Singh hanging from the fan hook, Shukla added.
Singh was rushed to the community health center where doctors pronounced him dead. The body was sent for an autopsy, police said.
The police are collecting information on the moneylender, they added.
