CHENNAI: A 27-year-old man from Chengalpet district committed suicide on Monday evening because of harassment by employees of a mobile money-lending app, police said. The deceased, Vivek Ranganathan from Pazhayannur village in Madurantakam, worked in a private company in Mamandur.
A few months ago Ranganathan took out a loan of 4,000? from an app to cover her elderly father’s medical expenses, an officer said. When it turned out that Ranganathan was unable to repay the lender online, he started getting calls from different people claiming to be employees of the app. Citing the family, police said the young man was unable to endure the harassment and turned off his phone. “As he did not answer some of their calls, they started texting his friends, calling him a fraudster. This resulted in frustration,” one investigator said.
Ranganathan became even more upset when he learned that employees had started calling and harassing family members. Police believe that was when he took the plunge.
Villagers demonstrated in front of the Madurantakam police station to demand the immediate arrest of the accused. Police have registered a case and are investigating it.
