A farmer committed suicide on his farm near here Thursday morning when he was apparently distraught with torture and abusive language allegedly used by a private finance company to fail to repay a loan, police said. In a letter purportedly written by him and collected from his home, Anandan, 30, said employees at the finance company used abusive language to delay repayment of the Rs 45 lakh loan, police said.
Anandan, who had also done plumbing work, said he had not been able to repay the loan to build a house because he had become financially weak due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the agriculture and its work were affected, they said. Holding the company and employees accountable for his extreme move, Anandan had asked the bank to reclaim the house and save his family consisting of his mother, wife and a one-year-old child, police said. .
Based on a complaint from Anandan’s wife, police recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy, they said, adding that further investigations had started.
