Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh:

A 48-year-old man was found dead in his rented accommodation in Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh after being allegedly harassed by a moneylender from whom he took a loan of Rs 50,000, police said today.

Dashrath Singh, from Chitrakoot district, lived in a rented house in Bhadohi of UP with his wife Durga Devi and their 12-year-old son. He used to run a street food kiosk in the area, Inspector Gaya Prasad Shukla of Gopiganj Police Station told Press Trust of India.

Durga Devi said Dashrath Singh took Rs 50,000 from a moneylender in Mirzapur and was regularly paying interest. However, he recently missed a few payments for unspecified reasons. The lender allegedly started threatening him, Gaya Prasad Shukla told the PTI news agency.

She added that the lender gave an ultimatum to make the payment on Thursday. Following this, Durga Devi went to the bank but found that it was closed. She and her son then went to a neighbor to arrange the money. When they returned, they found Dashrath Singh dead, Mr Shukla added.

Dashrath Singh was taken to the community health center where doctors pronounced him dead. The body was sent for forensic examination, police said.

The police are collecting information on the moneylender, they added.

More details expected.
